On Sept 10, 1935 Huey Long was crossing the corridor outside the Louisiana House of Representatives chambers and was shot by Dr. Carl Weiss. He lingered for two days before finally dying at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. Immediately conspiracy theories developed. Do you think that Huey Long's assassination was a conspiracy or the actions of a lone gunman?

Any verdict would require evidence depicting the character and motivations of Mr. Long and Dr. Weiss.

Huey Long had gerrymandered Weiss's father-in-law out of his judge seat. Weiss's wife had also been released from her teaching position at LSU. Harvey Fields visited Long at the Roosevelt Hotel and saw the body guards. Fields asked if they were required and Long told him of a plot against him. Following the assassination Fields had researched Huey's death soon after it occurred. He did uncover a couple of plots but it appears that neither actually led to Long's death. There was another rumor that has no basis that Roosevelt was involved due to Long's popularity and his Share the Wealth Society. The original conspiracy theory was hatched by Westbrook Pegler, a famous Journalist in Kansas City.

Was it Huey Long's assassination where there was a theory that his own bodyguards, in a fit of exuberance, shot Long themselves while trying to kill his would-be assassin?

There was a theory of this. Harvey F. Fields, close friend and law partner investigated this. He interviewed two body guards who were also retired sheriffs and they stated without a doubt that there was one shot and Weiss pulled the trigger. This was also corroborated by Fields' best friend James A. Noe. Noe gave a direct blood transfusion to Long at the Lady of the Lake Hospital the day before Long died. Fields also uncovered three plots to kill Long. These details are identified in the book "I Called Him Grand Dad. The Lost Political Papers of Harvey G. Fields".
